Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a specific language-based learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. Undiagnosed and untreated, dyslexia costs businesses and taxpayers in this country billions of dollars annually. Sixty percent (60%) of America’s prison inmates are illiterate and eighty-five percent (85%) of all juvenile offenders cannot read. Illiteracy is a major public health and economic problem in Rhode Island as well as in our country.
